World War II

World War II - Major Battles, Tactics, and Weapons

World War II lasted from 1935 - 1945 and these are the two sides of the war; left (blue) were the Allies and the right (red) were the Axis Powers.

Major Battles

This is a map of the major battles that took place during World War II. Five of the biggest battles of World War II are the Battle of Britain, the Battle of Midway,  the Battle of Stalingrad, the Battle of Kursk, and D-Day.

The Battle of Britain

The Battle of Britain was the first major battle of World War II. The Battle of Britain was the German air force's attempt to gain air superiority of the RAF from July to September 1940. Their ultimate failure was one of the turning points of World War II and prevented Germany from invading Britain.

The Battle of Midway

The Battle of Midway, fought between June 4-7, 1942, is widely regarded as the most important naval battle of the Pacific Campaign during World War II. Six months after Pearl Harbor, the U.S. Navy defeated an Imperial Japanese Navy against Midway Atoll, crippling the Japanese fleet and turning the tide of battle.

The Battle of Kursk

The Battle of Kursk took place after the Battle of Stalingrad and was the final offensive the Germans were able to launch in the east.

At Kursk alone, the Germans lost 720 tanks, 680 aircraft, and sustained 170,000 casualties. The battle was the largest tank battle in history, and the Germans suffered a terrible loss.
