World War I

World War I
World War I: Warfare, Battles, and Weapons

World War I was the first world war or great war. The world’s first global conflict, the “Great War” pitted the Central Powers of Germany, Austria-Hungary and the Ottoman Empire against the Allied forces of Great Britain, the United States, France, Russia, Italy and Japan. The introduction of modern technology to warfare resulted in unprecedented carnage and destruction, with more than 9 million soldiers killed by the end of the war in November 1918.
On the right are what was called the Allied powers and they fought against on the left what was called the central powers.  This war lasted from 1914-1918.

This is a map of all the major battles during World War I.

WARFARE:
During this war their were three major types of warfare and some of them were new ideas and not used in previous wars.  The three were Poison gas, Naval Warfare and Trench Warfare.

The first time poison gas was introduced was by the Germans.  In the Second Battle of Ypres.

In all, more than 100,000 tons of chemical weapons agents were used in World War I, some 500,000 troops were injured from their use and almost 30,000 died, including 2,000 Americans.

During World War I most of the battles were fought on land but the use of the seas was very vital.  For the transport of resources and manpower to win battles.

World War II - Major Battles, Tactics, and Weapons

World War II lasted from 1935 - 1945 and these are the two sides of the war; left (blue) were the Allies and the right (red) were the Axis Powers.

Major Battles

This is a map of the major battles that took place during World War II. Five of the biggest battles of World War II are the Battle of Britain, the Battle of Midway,  the Battle of Stalingrad, the Battle of Kursk, and D-Day.

The Battle of Britain

The Battle of Britain was the first major battle of World War II. The Battle of Britain was the German air force's attempt to gain air superiority of the RAF from July to September 1940. Their ultimate failure was one of the turning points of World War II and prevented Germany from invading Britain.

The Battle of Midway

The Battle of Midway, fought between June 4-7, 1942, is widely regarded as the most important naval battle of the Pacific Campaign during World War II. Six months after Pearl Harbor, the U.S. Navy defeated an Imperial Japanese Navy against Midway Atoll, crippling the Japanese fleet and turning the tide of battle.

The Battle of Kursk

The Battle of Kursk took place after the Battle of Stalingrad and was the final offensive the Germans were able to launch in the east.

At Kursk alone, the Germans lost 720 tanks, 680 aircraft, and sustained 170,000 casualties. The battle was the largest tank battle in history, and the Germans suffered a terrible loss.

Thirty Years' War (1618-1648)

Background

The Thirty Years' War was a series of wars in central Europe between 1618–1648. It was one of the most destructive conflicts in European history, and one of the longest. It began when Holy Roman
Emperor Ferdinand II of Bohemia
Emperor Ferdinand II of Bohemia attempted to curtail the religious activities of his subjects, sparking rebellion among Protestants. The war came to involve the major powers of Europe, with Sweden, France, Spain and Austria all waging campaigns primarily on German soil. this war was split into 4 periods:

The Bohemian Period (1618-1625)

The Danish Period (1625-1629)

The Swedish Period (1630-1635)

The French Period (1635- 1648)

The Peace of Westphalia ended the Holy Roman emperor's hope of restoring both his own power and the Catholic faith throughout the empire. The empire was now fragmented into a number of virtually independent states
