World War I
World War I: Warfare, Battles, and Weapons

World War I was the first world war or great war. The world’s first global conflict, the “Great War” pitted the Central Powers of Germany, Austria-Hungary and the Ottoman Empire against the Allied forces of Great Britain, the United States, France, Russia, Italy and Japan. The introduction of modern technology to warfare resulted in unprecedented carnage and destruction, with more than 9 million soldiers killed by the end of the war in November 1918.
On the right are what was called the Allied powers and they fought against on the left what was called the central powers.  This war lasted from 1914-1918.

This is a map of all the major battles during World War I.

WARFARE:
During this war their were three major types of warfare and some of them were new ideas and not used in previous wars.  The three were Poison gas, Naval Warfare and Trench Warfare.

The first time poison gas was introduced was by the Germans.  In the Second Battle of Ypres.

In all, more than 100,000 tons of chemical weapons agents were used in World War I, some 500,000 troops were injured from their use and almost 30,000 died, including 2,000 Americans.

During World War I most of the battles were fought on land but the use of the seas was very vital.  For the transport of resources and manpower to win battles.

  1. Two of the photos shown here don´t show weapons from WWI but WWII: the Stg44, the first assault rifle produced by Nazi Germany beginning 1943 and the UBoat Type VII also produced by Nazi Germany

  2. Also the map doesn´t show "all major battles" of WWI but rather the Western Front only, leaving out everything on the Eastern Front and at least 12 others (i.e. the Brusilov Offensive 1916 with about 2 Mil casualties
